Turning the corner: Greenhouse gas emissions are up, but help is on the way
The bad news first: New data shows greenhouse gas emissions in Washington rose 1.3% from 2017 to 2018, reaching 99.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
On the one hand, 1.3% is a small increase. On the other hand, in recent years, Washington has adopted a number of new policies designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. If emissions are going up, are those policies really working?
Yes, our carbon reduction policies are, in fact, working. But they are phasing in slowly, in many cases, and a number were enacted into law after 2018, the most recent year for which we have data.

The Bay Area will never forget how many lives were lost and how much damage was done during the magnitude 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989. Since then, the technology industry has taken on the challenge of making our workplaces, hospitals and houses more earthquake safe.
After the historic quake, Bay Area engineers went to work designing new technology to eventually anchor the buildings of today. Buildings like the new Stanford Hospital, made to stand out above ground and to withstand an earthquake of 8.0 underground.
Under the building, engineer Bert Hurlbut showed NBC Bay Area how the structure is raised up above 206 base isolators, pedestals secured under the hospital’s foundation. They weigh up to 4 tons each, he said, allowing the structure to shift by as much as 6 feet during an earthquake.

What to Know
Dejon Barnes, 18, and Kenneth Ford, 23, were arraigned on murder charges in the dragging death of 18-year-old Kemoni Miller.
Authorities said on Nov. 16, Miller was dragged by the suspects after he tried selling them an iPhone XS on Gallivan Boulevard.
Miller was dragged about half a mile and suffered a life-threatening head injury when he fell from the vehicle. He died days later.
